On Wednesday, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state of Assam will have three new medical colleges. Addressing the media he said that the three new colleges will be established in Kokrajhar, Nalbari and Tinsukia in the coming three years time.
Talking about the new medical colleges he said that each college will have 100 seats for the education along with the capacity of 500 beds.
The foundation stone for the new colleges will be laid in the month of January by the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
At present the state has six medical colleges located in Gauhati Medical College, Assam Medical College, Silchar Medical College, Tezpur Medical College, Jorhat Medical College and Barpeta Medical College. These six colleges together have 726 MBBS seats.
Apart from the proposed medical colleges, four new medical colleges are under construction at Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and at Diphu. Combined together these colleges have the capacity of 400 students.
Once the construction for all the medical colleges in finished, the state will have a total of 1426 seats for the medical students.
