TERI University has announced the commencement of a new MBA programme: 'Urban Management'. The programme which aims at training students in Urban Management integrates the knowledge of traditional business management with the domain knowledge of sustainable urban development, and prepares professional urban managers for advanced careers in governments and parastatals, consulting firms, financial institutions, research institutions, non-governmental organisations and public and private sector firms engaged in urban and real estate development and management.
The programme attains immense significance, as there has been an increasing demand for urban professionals for capacity building, and hence it is indicative of a paradigm shift from urban planning to urban management.
Fresh graduates from any related discipline such as geography, economics, sociology, social work, planning and architecture, engineering and public administration can enrol for the programme. Applications from sponsored candidates from government agencies and private sector organisations engaged in urban development are also invited.
This full-time two-year (four semester) programme targets young individuals with a passion to pursue their dreams in sustainable urban development.
TERI University's roots can be traced back to 1998, when the TERI School of Advanced Studies was established. The School was subsequently renamed TERI University in October 2006. TERI University was conceived to cater to the need of disseminating the vast reservoir of knowledge created by TERI, a not-for-profit, independent research institute recognised globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.
The genesis of TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI. The relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of the University's academic units.
This vision was further strengthened in 1999, when the University was granted "Deemed to be University" status by the University Grants Commission and notified by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education and Government of India.
Since its inception, the University has offered not just world-class education, but also an environment that enables its students to develop fresh perspectives on their subjects of study. This includes regular interactions with researchers, scientists and academicians. The University's first convocation was held on 16 October 2006, where 8 doctoral and 36 master's degrees were awarded.
An exciting phase in the growth of the TERI University commenced few years ago, when it moved to this new campus-- built on a 2 acre plot that provides a setting which enhances learning and showcases the concept of modern green buildings. The campus is aesthetically designed with several features of passive solar design, energy-efficiency and water and waste management systems.
The University encourages the exchange of ideas, cultural understanding, and wide range of knowledge that would result from an international exposure. The University firmly believes that ample opportunity should be provided to students to unwind and relax. From participating in presentations to displaying their creative talent in the University's annual festivals, students have many ways in which to take a break from classroom rigour.
