Out of 1400 students registered with the placement cell of
IIT-Kanpur, almost 200 opted out of the drive, reducing the number to 200.
Those who opted mainly want to do PhD or would like to go for civil services. It's
not only this year, but most of the times, students opt out of placements due
to aspirations for higher studies which lead them towards US universities.
Also, the aura of cracking a civil services exam lures them to opt out. A few
might also want to try out for starting their own ventures and will be helped
by SIDBI Innovation and Incubation centre.
On December 1, the placement drive started in IIT-Kanpur, in which more than 800 students were hired. Just in a fortnight, 800 students managed to secure their places. These were hired by 240 companies which have visited the IIT-Kanpur campus till now.
A total of 350-360 companies had agreed to participate in the placement drive held for students this year. Out of which 240 companies hired 800 students and now college is trying to place the remaining 400 students. As there are 120 more companies who still have to visit the campus. It was after heavy rain falls in Chennai that the placement drive was slowed down after the first week. However, now the companies have reached the campus (based in Chennai who couldn't reach earlier) and completed their process in Kanpur.
The number of students registering themselves with the placement cell was 1450 initially which reduced to 1200. The first phase of the campus drive will end on December 22nd expecting to place 950-1000 students. It would be an achievement for placement cell if this is accomplished, as then just 200-250 students would be left for the second phase. It is expected to begin in January but the dates are not out yet. It will be completed in the month of March.
It is confirmed by the sources that more than 200 students opted out of the drive owing to different reasons (PhD, civil services and dreams of becoming an entrepreneur) reducing the number of students to 1200. However, the drive has been a success with giving placements to 800 students in just a fortnight. Also, it is expected that 100-150 students would be placed by the end of first phase, i.e. December 22nd.
The companies visiting IIT-Kanpur are major tech-giants, software firms, manufacturing companies. These offer huge packages to the students who get hired, often up to one crore per annum. These companies belong both to India and abroad.
