Over the last few years the government has focused on identifying the most backward areas of the country and used district level indicators of girl's education and health and social disadvantages.
According to the data from the Ministry Of Human Resource Development and UNICEF, the states that rank the best in terms of gender related education indicators are Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Digital Gender Atlas for Advancing Girl's Education uses the data earlier collected by the government agencies and also creates a new composite index using 21 indicators to check the education of the girls ,using four basic factors-access, infrastructure, teachers and outcomes.
It helps the resources to be channelized in the most required areas of the state.
As the system earlier adopted looked at the gender gap indicators seemed no longer adequate, a new system has been developed. Issues on girl's education like early marriage or joining the workforce early are studied on the Atlas as the Vulnerability Index of Factors.
Vrinda Srup the secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy informed that in the index's range for elementary education states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Delhi and Punjab are in the top 25%.
The worst position is of the Central and northern States, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The Barabanki, Bahraich and Shrawasti districts in Uttar Pradesh are no better
But in the better positioned states also, some areas stand low in the composite girl's education indicator such as the Ramanathapuram, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts in Tamil Nadu. Bangalore is equal to Mumbai or Pune, but the neighbouring Tumkur district stains to be among the worst district in terms of girl education.
