Based on the lines of the Ofsted ratings on which schools in UK are ranked, public and private schools in the national capital will soon be assessed by the government of Delhi on parameters such as cleanliness, quality of teaching, school infrastructure and safety.
"This kind of rating is being developed to enable parents to make informed choices about schools they would pick for their children. The entire idea is not to rank schools as first or second, but it could be in the form of grades with the intent to help parents," said Atishi Marlena, advisor to Education Minister Manish Sisodia.
During the meeting of the Delhi State Education Council on Wednesday the need to rate the schools of capital was also discussed thoroughly. The rating will be first of a kind in the entire nation.
Schools in UK are inspected by the Ofsted which prepare the reports and then submit them to the parliament. In the reports it suggest the effectiveness of the school and also recommend suggestions which schools can further implement to increase their effectiveness and contribution to the society and in turn their overall rankings.
For inspecting the schools in the national capital region, Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) will be the nodal agency.
"Since DCPCR has the mandate to look into implementation of the Right to Education Act 2009, it was decided to make them the nodal agency. Government, as a provider of education, cannot be doing so," said Marlena.
