In 2009, The Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) started six special research projects which include compilation of 'Dictionary of Martyrs: India's Freedom Struggle'. This is to be completed by December end, this year.

Smriti Irani, (television actress and human resource development minister) has stated that there are at present six special research projects in hand by ICHR. She wrote it in a reply to Rajya Sabha.

A whopping Rs 1.5 crore had already been incurred as an expenditure on the special project Dictionary of Martyrs: India's Freedom Struggle (1857-1947)' confirmed the state minister in her reply.

Another project sanctioned in 1973 "'Towards Freedom: Documents on the Movement for Independence in India" which was declared as completed had the state spending Rs 2.45 crore on it. Its printing is however, still in progress.

Other projects which are in the pipeline next include 'Documents on Economic History during the British Rule in Northern and Western India in the late Nineteenth Century: Quality of Life', 'Translation of Dutch Sources (1617-30)' and 'Survey, Collection and Documentation of Archival Sources of North East India'. All of these were started in 2012.

Another ICHR project which was sanctioned in 1990 is still ongoing, namely, 'Dictionary of Socio Economic and Administrative Terms in Indian/South Asian Inscriptions'.
