As data showed by the Lok Sabha on Monday revealed that the private Engineering colleges in country have reached their saturation point. Last year, around 54% of the undergraduate and graduate seats in the private engineering colleges could not find any candidates as a result of which, for the academic year 2017-18, the private institutes withdrew 96,000 seats.

Also, the number of engineering colleges in country went down by 83. AICTE council chairman D Sahasrabuddhe, in April, said that 275 colleges in the country had applied for the closure.

Comparing the results with the government engineering college it was found that in those colleges only 28% seats went vacant in the academic year 2016-17. For the academic year 2017-18, 6151 seats in the colleges were added.

The maximum vacant seats in the private colleges were in Himachal Pradesh (83%) and were then followed by the following colleges:

  • Uttarakhand (74.23%)
  • Haryana (73.32%)
  • Rajasthan (69.68 %)
  • Uttar Pradesh (67.33%)
