Niti (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog would soon be placing a bill in front of the cabinet for approval. The bill is regarding restructuring of the regulatory framework for the medical institutions.
Also an announcement was made to replace the Medical Council of India with a new body.
Sources say that the new body would be named as National Medical Commission (NMC).
Once the centre gives the approval to the bill National Medical Commission would become the main regulatory body and will take over all the roles of Medical Council of India (MCI).
A senior official from the Niti Aayog said “preparations are on for putting forth the National Medical Commission bill 2016 and the bill is likely to be placed before the cabinet soon”.
The move to replace MCI with NMC came after the Vice-Chairman of the Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya held high level talks where he looked into the poor regulation of the medical institutes by the MCI and proposed replacing MCI with NMC.
As per the reports NMC will constitute of eminent doctors and experts from related fields. There would be 19-20 members in NMC including the chairman and the tenure would be of 5 years. There would be members from others fields also.
The major focus of MNC would be to ensure quality education as per the global standards.
