The first phase of the placement season has
ended with established Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses seeing a
considerable decline in plum job offers, especially international ones. However,
the newer IITs, seem to have scored on this front this time. IITs in Patna,
Ropar, Gandhinagar, Indore, Mandi and Hyderabad, all less than a decade old, reported
an increase in top as well as average salaries offered to their students.
With the second phase of the placement season set to begin soon, these IITs are
busy setting the ground for campus recruiters. Ropar and Mandi have invited
more companies across different sectors this year. B-Tech offers at Patna have
reached 106 in phase I compared to a total of 118 offers received in phase I
and II combined last year. Pre-placement offers at IIT Hyderabad increased to
25 from 15 last year. Twenty new companies visited Gandhinagar this season. This
has resulted in a higher number of offers for these IITs.
Along with Indore and Ropar, Mandi has bagged its first international offers too, with top salaries at around Rs. 40 lakhs per annum. Japanese companies form the majority of foreign recruiters; with 16 international offers for IIT Hyderabad, compared with only six last year. IIT Mandi bagged four international offers from a Japanese company while IIT Patna received this year’s first international offer of about Rs. 35 lakhs. The highest international salary this year was Rs. 40 lakhs for Mandi and Rs. 38 lakhs for Hyderabad.
The average salary at Mandi has also increased to Rs. 13.5 lakhs this year. The average salary in the first phase of placements is about Rs. 14.5 lakhs at IIT Indore; an increase of around 30% from last year. The highest salary has also increased, from Rs. 28 lakhs last year to more than Rs. 30 lakhs.
Amazon, one of IITs big recruiters, visited 17 IITs including Indore, Jodhpur and Bhubaneswar this year. Raj Raghavan, Amazon HR director for Asia-Pacific, has stated that their focus is to build a powerful ecosystem where they continue to reinforce their association with older IITs and foster relationships with the younger IITs.
