For admission in medical colleges, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the academic year 2017-18 will be held in eight different languages, namely, English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu for aspiring students. The Union health minister, JP Nadda, stated that qualified candidates will be eligible for all India quota and are also entitled for the various state government and the institute quotas available, irrespective of medium chosen by the students, along with the subject for other eligibility criteria.

The Union health minister had met the health ministers and the health secretaries of 18 states and Union Territories in the month of May. The meeting was held to discuss the implementation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to be held across the country. According to the statement given by AK Singhal, Joint secretary, Medical Education, it is clear that both Central health ministry and state health ministries, with mutual understanding, have come to the conclusion to offer equal opportunities to the students appearing for the state board exams and satisfying the criteria.

The decision of having the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in eight languages has been taken to help the students while taking the exam from different states and in their own languages. The languages English and Hindi are common, while the other languages like Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu are the useful regional languages. The earlier entrance test AIPMT has been replaced with National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions in medical and dental colleges all over India. And it clearly says that no other medical exam will be conducted by any other state.
