On Thursday, October 24, 2019, Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) said that private schools have refunded the money which they have taken from the EWS category students for books and uniforms. The commission said that they have received a complaint from a father of a student that his son has been denied free books and uniforms by the school.

A notice issued by the DCPCR mentioned that private unaided recognized schools were directed to issue free books, uniforms and writing material to the students which were admitted under the EWS category and schools cannot demand money from such students for the same.

This also violates the Right to Education (RTE) Act which mandates private schools to reserve 25 percent of the seats for the EWS/DG category and impart them free and compulsory education until they complete their elementary education, the notice said.

The commission had directed the said school to return the amount it has taken from the father of the student. Following the notice, the school refunded INR 4,442 which it had taken for books and uniforms.
