According to the recommendation given by Roopanwal judicial commission regarding the suicide case of Rohit Vemula who was a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad, Union Minister for Human Resource and Development, Prakash Javadekar, agreed that the students coming from different states and Universities and studying at University of Delhi have to register one legal guardian before getting admission to the University.
HRD Minister elaborated incidents of his college days, when a legal guardian system was followed and pressed the need to follow the same.
Reasons behind the move
It was suggested by Roopanwal judicial commission, after the unfortunate incident of suicide at the University of Hyderabad. The commission stressed the need for having easily approachable counselors and a well-formed cell to look after any grievances, especially among the underprivileged students.
But the minister did not add anything about how to manage the students coming from different places who do not get any local guardians.
Former Vice-Chancellor suggested that the senior tutors can be given the responsibility of the guardians for those students who are unable to get any local guardian in Delhi. He also added that most of the students come from far distances and only option is to assign a tutor for a group of students, similar to Cambridge. Online counseling is a better option as the students will not be face to face with the counselor.
Plan for Inducting new students
HRD minister suggested that a group induction program will be helpful for the students coming from various places and backgrounds to make them feel comfortable.
Minister has agreed to the added recommendations such as adapting and mentoring the students and making the students feel better while studying. Every university across the country should follow such systems which will avoid any unwanted incidents, like suicides in the campuses.
