The 'No School Bag Day' initiative by the Manipur Government has been receiving a positive response from the students, some schools authorities and parents.

The 'No School Bag Day' bag day was enforced by the Manipur Government on all working Saturdays for the students from classes 1 to 8. The 'No School Bag Day' applies to all schools -- government, government-aided, and private schools. The main aim of the day is to impart the skills to the students other than the textbooks.

'For so many years, we have been carrying bags. The bags are also heavy but we get used to carrying bags. Now we don't have to carry bags on Saturdays. We thank the government, an eighth standard student Tanya told ANI.

The decision was taken by the government after considering the long term physical and mental effects of carrying such heavy bags every day. Young students often have to face inconveniences, health problems and discomforts while carrying such heavy bags.

"The world is changing so fast, we must give some liberty to children. After due consideration, the education department took the decision. The students of the primary and mid-level school are often found engaged in routine work related to the school curriculum, additional homework and assignments. This leaves young boys and girls with little time for other activities, including games, sports, extra co-curricular activities that help students in personality development” Chief Minister N Biren Singh said.

The government has also directed the schools to ensure that students take part in the extra-curricular activities so that school can become a more joyful place for learning on all working days.
