The Seed Industry Program 2013 delivered jointly by the Center for Executive Education at Sathguru Management Consultants and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Cornell University, Ithaca, NY successfully concluded on 10 October 2013. The four day executive development program held at Hyderabad, India witnessed enthusiastic participation from seed industry professionals, academics and scientists from both public and private sectors from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, USA and Switzerland.
The program offered an ideal platform for participants to enhance their ability to develop strategic solutions to augment business through a deeper understanding of research management, technology access through licensing, regulatory compliance, market access factors and more.
"This program was very fruitful as it exposed me to not just the commercial aspects but also other aspects of plant breeding. It explained the importance of planning to reap the economic benefit," said Dr. H. K. Jaiswal, Professor at Banaras Hindu University.
A distinguished faculty drawn from academia and industry delivered information laden presentations on a range of topics such as: trends in agriculture biotechnology and their impact; global seed sector trends and challenges; intricacies of plant variety protection and their impact on trait development and delivery; principles of valuation and valuation metrics for the seed industry; development and effective use of information systems for seed R&D, production and distribution; biotech successes in the seed industry; the future of plant breeding and approaches to new trait development; strategies for technology leadership; growth and development and more.
A key feature of the program was a special segment on licensing principles and practices followed by a case study. This proved to be a very useful session for participants from industries constantly tapping into new scientific discoveries and innovations to provide new products. "It was an excellent program for learning about the strategies for gaining a competitive position in the seed industry," said Dr. Amit Varma, Vice President in-charge of Technology at Coromandel International Limited.
Increased participation from other countries and a good mix of representation from public and private sectors ensured greater depth in post presentation discussions as participants were able to share their myriad experiences and insights on various topics and thereby greatly increased individual awareness of the immense potential for growth in the industry.
