Three new Masters programmes in film and television, art history and theatre shall be introduced in JNU from the next academic session.

JNU's vice-chancellor SK Sopory elucidated that the Academic Council (AC) has given a green signal to start three new MA programmes from the academic year 2016-17. The courses shall be MA in Art History and Visual Studies; MA in Film, Television and New Media Studies; and MA in Theatre and Performance Studies.

The proposal for starting these courses was put forward by The Board of Studies of the School of Arts and Aesthetics. This recommendation was introduced in July, and the discussions and approvals were set in place by the board prior to putting it before the University council. The preface, courses and credits have been worked out for all the three programmes, SK Sopory added.

The Academic Council is also considering a proposal to start a 'School of Indian Languages', which shall offer post-graduate programmes and research courses in Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi, Assamese, Bengali and Odia languages.

The proposal has now been furthered to the various departments of the university, and any decision on the proposal shall be taken after receiving due feedback.

The AC has however rejected a proposal to start short-termed courses in Indian culture and Yoga, which was supposedly aimed at "propagating spiritual and historical traditions and establishing Indian values in the world".
