Many students and teachers are protesting in DU against granting autonomy status to the colleges but it is still expected that Center is ready to grant the Colleges full operational autonomy which will include financial matters as well.
According to the reports, top ranking educational institutes which are funded by the Center will get full autonomy including that in the financial matters. These institutes are Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, Shri Ram College of Commerce and Lady Shri Ram College.
Reasons for granting autonomy
- Granting autonomy to the colleges is a part of wide range of educational reform plan which are finalized by the high-powered committee headed by Niti Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya.
- If implemented, this move will help in independent raising the resources.
Explaining, how autonomy will lead to privatization, Rajesh Jha, a teacher at the Rajdhani College said "Once colleges become autonomous, the trusts running the colleges will have the right to set up similar institutions anywhere in the country with self-financing courses. Using the brand names of these DU colleges that have a long legacy and history, the government is trying to push privatization, with trusts being the owners of the colleges, and the university no longer being a part of the administration."
Previous statements on the college autonomy
On February 1, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely while presenting the Union Budget 2017-18 said that focus will be on energizing the youth and to create jobs for them. Further in the budget speech minister said "Greater autonomy will be provided to major institutes."
