In the session of Lok Sabha, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar introduced the much awaited IIT ACT. This act will aim at introduction of six new IITs as well as the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad under the ambit of the IIT Act.

The second day of Parliament's Monsoon session saw passage of three bills that were hugely debated and discussed in both the houses. The highlight was of this day was IIT ACT and The National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Both of these were introduced by the recently appointed Union Human Resources Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar.

According to the bill, the new IITs which will be incorporated in the nation are: IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Goa, IIT Dharwar, IIT Bhilai and IIT Jammu. Also, the bill points at declaring ISM Dhanbad as an institute of national importance. It also aims to integrate it with the IIT system and therefore, it would be called IIT (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. On introducing the bill, Prakash Javadekar said, "These institutes need to be brought within the ambit of the aforesaid Act for the purpose of declaring them as institutions of national importance."
