An increase of 5800 MBBS seats will be witnessed in the
country due to new medical colleges being set up in 58 districts. The
parliament was informed today about it.
Health and Family Welfare Minister, J P Nadda said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha that these medical colleges are being established under a centrally sponsored scheme for "Establishment of Medical Colleges attached with existing District/Referral hospitals".
He added to this announcement that, for the first phase 58 districts in total have been identified. This initiative would result in 5800 MBBS seats in the country.
But what are the criteria to identify a district? To this, he answered that district hospitals/referral hospital with bed strength of 200 or more, districts where there is no medical college and preference to under-served areas will be given.
Also, in response to a question at Rajya Sabha, Nadda added that Government Medical College at Jaipur will be upgraded.
He confirmed that Government Medical College, Jaipur will be upgraded under phase-IV of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.
