When engineering colleges in the state of Mumbai are facing the shortage of candidates, the Industrial Training Institutes by the Government of India have emerged as a winner.

There are around 1.36 lakh seats available in It is this year and 3000 new seats have also been added in order to accommodate the increasing demand from the students for the pragmatic courses. Contrary to the situation, no new seats were added to the engineering colleges of the state and intake is likely to fall by 10,000 seats, the sources said.

Sources in the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training said that some of the courses offered by the ITIs are in great demand because of the scope of employability.

Also, ITIs managed and run by the government are offering more seats than the private ITIs. In fact, they are offering twice as many seats. In the state, there are 417 government ITIs and 477 private ones.

In 2017, the ITIs of the state received twice the number of applications against the number of the seats which were on offer indicating a rise in the demand for courses offered by the ITIs. From past few years, ITIs have been witnessing the rise in the number of applicants.

The DVET has entered into tie-ups with the several manufacturing giants with the aim of providing the employment to the students. “This has worked in the studentsʼ favour and people are seeing that there is an employment option by the time they pass out,” said a DVET official.
