The top technology campuses faced a sharp fall in the recruiting process when the job offers remained limited in IITs of Kharagpur, Kanpur and Roorkee. Also the number of offers given to IITs of  Mumbai, Madras and Guwahati are higher in number, but the offers given per company are limited when compared to  last year. The offer letters received from the companies like Coal India, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs have been very limited.

The offers made by companies this year are 1,080 compared to 1,300 last year for IIT-Kharagpur. For IIT-Kanpur the offers received this year are 725 compared to the 800 in 2016.
The trend of the offers was not directly linked to the Demonetisation by both public and private India Inc, but the entire policy is to wait and watch the situation which indicates lower growth for the fiscal.

Member of the All-IIT Placement Committee expressed that the fall in the recruitment is due to the global slowdown as stated by the companies.

According to the HR director at Coal India, R Mohandas, the Maharatna PSU has only made 290 offers this year compared to 450 last year  and plans to recruit more candidates from the open market. The giant Microsoft also has reduced the number of offers made to IITs but said that the momentum will continue in near future.

The chairperson of the placement cell at IIT-Kharagpur, Debashish Deb has said that the main reason for the fall in offers is the absence of startups and also felt the need to organize and distribute the offers among IITs.

Most companies have opted for pre-placement offers instead of campus selection which could reduce the number of offers.
