The information & broadcasting Ministry (I&B) has confirmed to grant the permission to IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication) to apply for the deemed status, In order to incorporate the full blown media university.

IIMC director Mr. KG Suresh said, "We are in an expansion mode and this will help us prepare students for higher education and career options other than journalism, advertising and public relations."

Crux of the issue:-

"¢After getting the new status, IIMC would be able to award degrees instead of diplomas

"¢A deemed university status means the institute need not seek consent from Parliament for its elevation

"¢Now, to ahead with the process IIMC can seeks permission from University Grants Commission (UGC) for a change in status.

In a recent HT report, an official said that the Information and broadcasting minister Venkaiah Naidu has agreed to the request of the institute.

"It has been proposed that instead of introducing a bill in Parliament for seeking an institute of national importance status for it as was suggested earlier, IIMC will be a deemed university with Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) and the National Centre of Excellence in Animation, Gaming and Visual Effects affiliated to it," official added.

IIMC is getting constant request for a while, from candidates to offer them a degree as a post-graduate certificate for pursuing higher education and applying for government jobs.
