Following the HRD prerogative established over the IIMs in the recent weeks regarding the recognition of reservation quota in recruiting faculties in the IIMs, the Union Government on Thursday directed that the premier institutes are not immune to reservation system specified for the weaker section.
The HRD Ministry anticipated that the IIMs must abide by the rules envisaged in the constitution.
"The Constitution provides for reservation and no one is above the Constitution. There is a list of exempted institutions, but the IIMs are not among them," said Ministry official according to reports from leading newspaper.
Revolving issues over reservation in IIMs faculty recruitment:
- The IIM fraternity expressed concerns over the reservation policy fearing it might degrade the education quality of the institutes
- The central government, during the reign of INC in 2008, lobbied the quota scheme in the parliament and issued the direction that all centrally funded universities including the premier institutes such as IITs, IIMs, NITs shall recruit faculty members under the quota system reserved for the SCs/STs and OBC
- Ever since the former HRD Minister Arjun Singh pushed the reservation policy, the IIMs and IITs fraternity has been differing with the directions
- Before the proposed reservation bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, the bill was lapsed following the dissolution of the 14th Lok Sabha.
