C Raveendranath, Kerala’s State education minister has declared that the government is contemplating sanctioning of funds as supplementary demand for grant, for giving out higher education scholarships to degree and post-graduate students.
On Wednesday, the assembly was informed by Raveendran that Kerala State Higher Education Council would be given the amount as supplementary demand for grant. The scholarship to be disbursed comes to Rs 2,374 lakhs as it has been pending for the academic period of 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17
Replying to a submission moved by Anwar Sadath from Congress moved a submission
in this regard to which the minister replied that the Council finds the amount
for scholarship from the grant-in-aid. This grant-in-aid is sanctioned annually
by the government.
The government had not sanctioned grant-in-aid to the council for the year
2015-16 and "that is why scholarship was not given during that
period," he emphasized.
Anwar Sadath drew everybody’s attention towards the fact that students were
being adversely affected by the delay in disbursal of the scholarship, especially
those hailing from economically weak backgrounds.
