Christ and Jain universities in
BENGALURU have been given 'B' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation
(NAAC), which is a statutory body of the UGC. Due to this, some universities
are planning to approach the appeals committee seeking revision.
NAAC had announced the list of 38 deemed universities recommended for accreditation in the country at its 71st executive committee meeting last month. Out of these 38 universities, 17 were given "A" grade, 20 with "B" and one of them got "C" grade. In 2009, these 38 deemed universities were blacklisted by the Tandon Committee for various flaws. Some of them also approached the court at a later stage. Thus, to check if these universities were meeting the criteria for which they were declared deemed and whether they were complying with government conditions, MHRD (Ministry of human resources development) had set up the committee. NAAC assessed and accredited all these universities fol lowing the September 8, 2015 Supreme Court order.
These grades are important as better grades by NAAC grades help universities get more funding and attract reputed companies during campus placements. Universities getting A grade in Karnataka are- Sri Siddhartha Academy of Higher Education, Tumakuru, and Yenepoya University, Mangaluru, those getting B grade- Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, Kolar, and BLDE University, Vijayapura. Those frustrated are filing an appeal against these ratings such as Jain University Trust, confirmed its president.
An academician said that some universities are cheating the UGC as they sell medical seats and do not have full time vice-chancellors. They impersonate admission process.
