The government of Gujarat State has decided to implement 10 percent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of the society belonging to the upper caste category from January 14, 2019, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said. The new law was introduced by the center this week.
The criteria will only be applicable to the jobs for which advertisements have been published and first stage examinations are yet to be conducted. On Saturday, the landmark bill was passed by the government which provide 10 percent reservation to the candidates in education and government jobs which fall outside high income group.
Jobs are already reserved for the underprivileged and disadvantaged lower castes and there will be no change in that. The bill was passed by the government but the opposition criticized the move saying that this is a pre-election gimmick to cover high unemployment rate in the nation.
Earlier in 2016, the High Court in Gujarat rejected a state government ordinance providing members of the economically weaker section of the society reservation in government jobs and educational institutes.
