Crisis of climate change is lurking on everyone's head and in such time it is crucial that environmental awareness is part of our everyday conversation. In the recent direction SC smacked the government for its failure in implementing the Environment Science as a compulsory subject in college and school curriculum. A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justices D Y Chandrachud and S K Kaul scolded the government badly saying "You (Centre) are a party which is just not bothered. You have constituted a committee (for implementation of SC orders) which has never met."
The bench told that though the committee for this has already been set up by the center government but the members have not met each other and so far, nothing has been done in this regard by the center given the directions for the same were issued 26 years ago.
More regarding the report
Earlier, ASG told the court that that center has already constitutes a committee which comprises of four members and Chairman and their sole job is review the matters related to the directions which were issued 26 years ago.
The bench was hearing the plea of Mehta who in its defense said "the directions passed in 1991 on his PIL have not been complied with letter and spirit and had asked the Centre to apprise it on what steps could be taken to ensure that the curricula include Environment Science as a compulsory subject."
"So far as education up to college level is concerned, we would require every state Government and every Education Board connected with education up to matriculation or even intermediate colleges to immediately take steps to enforce compulsory education on environment in a graded way. This should be so done that in the next academic year, there would be compliance of this requirement," said the Bench.
