Bharat Ratna CNR Rao addressed the IIT Delhi students at their 47th Convocation Ceremony.
Addressing the students he said that “The government should not indulge in the frequent policy changes as regards to the IITs. Rather they should become enabling agency by giving them more autonomy and funds”. He added that “IITs are the prized brands for India”.
CNR Rao also said that “I don’t think government can run good institutions, government is an enabling institution. Government shouldn’t forget that IITs are the prized brand for India. And it is unfortunate that IITs are not independent entity. I don’t see any future in Indian science and technology unless the government supports and gives better funding to IITs. They should not say that IITs should support themselves, government has to support as to maintain the quality & research in the IITs”.
IITs Delhi conferred 264 PhD Degrees, 109 MBA, 569 MTech and 621 BTechs. A total of 1,964 degrees and diplomas were conferred.
“IITs should keep on transforming and retain its brand value. IITs are long standing brand for India”. He added. The only institutions known worldwide are the IITs.
He
said that “There are many new areas where IITS have to become experts and there
are many areas missing in Indian education. These are the areas where IITs need
to work upon”.
