Getting seats reserved for the EWS in private schools has
been one of the biggest challenges for the Government in the field of
education. The administration is trying hard to ensure that this rule is upheld
in Mumbai in this academic session.
Though there were initial technical glitches in the online process for admissions that interrupted the process, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has now decided to go ahead with the 1st round of the seat allocation in schools, starting from 28th February.
The process for giving admissions to the kids from economically weaker section started from 9th February 2017. As of now, more than 3,000 applications have been submitted by the parents so far.
The RTE Act states that 25% seats in all the schools must be reserved for the students coming from the economically weaker section.
The deputy education officer, Prakash Charhate was quoted as saying, "We plan to hold the first round of lottery on February 28, three days after the last date of application." The officer said that the admission confirmation for the 1st rounds of admissions would be confirmed in about four days prior to the beginning of the second round of applications.
In all, about 7,449 seats are available to be filled under the EWS quota. Last year, the number was seats were 9,664. However, the number of schools has increased from 317 to 334.
