Undergraduate students in the state aided colleges might soon have to follow a dress code as suggested by the notification issued by Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya , the Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister.

On Sunday, at the National Services Scheme (NSS), Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya said that the idea of a dress code was to bring uniformity among students. "We are thinking over a plan to implement dress code in colleges," commented Pawaiya.

Ashish Upadhyaya, who is the Principal secretary of Higher Education Department confirmed Pawaiya's declaration and said that there could be a state-wide dress code for all the colleges and a meeting of the Janbhagidari Samiti will soon be held to take a call in this regard.

Janbhagidari Samiti is responsible for public representation in the colleges and it also helps colleges in getting financial aid and grants.

However this decision has got a mixed response from people. On one hand, the student union bodies feel that such a move comes across as arbitrary and dictating, while on the other hand, some students have welcomed this decision.

"Dress code will be a good decision as it will end all kind of differences among students in colleges. Sometimes, an inferiority complex develops among students from weaker background because of clothes. I would be very happy if the dress code is implemented in colleges," told Mayank Yadav, a BCom student

Harsh Chandel , the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Bhopal District division, expressed his apprehensions over imposition of a dress code saying, "Students should be given the freedom to wear clothes of their choice and the final decision should be taken with the assent of the students."

"Before implementation, student voices should be heard by the higher education department. The government is unnecessarily trying to take control of things by implementing such rules," reported Vivek Triptahi, the spokesperson of NSUI.
