Until the colleges are getting a University status along with powers to award degrees, just giving them an increased autonomy won’t translate into them not being a part of the University anymore.

A number of colleges under the Delhi University have long been making calls for a greater autonomy but nothing has come of it till now. But the colleges have now decided to give it another shot. Colleges run by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee and prestigious colleges such as Hansraj, SRCC, St Stephens and Ramjas have approached the Delhi University and the Human Resource Development ministry to push for their case of an increased autonomy and greater powers in decision making.

A University official was quoted as saying on the development, "Following announcement of provisions for granting more autonomy to colleges in the annual budget, we have formed a committee to study such proposals being sent by colleges and streamline the process."

Until the colleges are getting a University status along with powers to award degrees, just giving them an increased autonomy won’t translate into them not being a part of the University anymore. The DU official explained, "At present, we are inviting proposals from colleges in this regard which the committee will study and only "quality institutions" will be considered for granting of autonomous tag.”

In order to obtain the much revered autonomous status, the colleges need to impart high quality education, maintain the prescribed ration of students and faculties, have the prescribed physical infrastructure and gain NAAC accreditation’s A grade for a minimum of 3 times consecutively.
