On Monday, the Delhi HC permitted Delhi University's Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa college for the commencement of their admission procedure under minority status, which was granted to the college by National Commission for Minority Educational Institution's (NCMEI) in 2011.
The teachers challenged the order of NCMEI, which granted minority status. The plea to put up a stay on the decision was filed for the notion that it would affect the keen interest of the students belonging to SC/ST. Considering the plea of DU and the teachers, the High Court decided for a stay on the decision in 2012. Both DU and the teachers had challenged the decision of the minority status, but DU had withdrawn its petition last year in July as they had no objection. The HC had asked "how is the minority status going to affect the teachers of the college?". The plea filed by the teachers is now being heard separately by the judiciary. After the orders of commencement of admission procedure, bench of judges has also made a statement for hiring new candidates for the various posts of teachers in the college which are subjected to the final verdict of the writ petition filed.
Last year in July, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) made certain to the court that recruitment will carry on in the old and traditional way. This traditional way permitted admissions for general quota as well as SC/ST/OBC. This year, DSGMC made a statement that of DU has no objection against the minority status granted, then the interim arrangement will not be continued and will not be bound by the provisions of the SC/ST Reservation Act. In the plea filed for the stay, the teachers appealed that the minority tag granted to the university will severely affect students belonging to SC/ST/OBC.
Teachers again filed a petition seeking a stay on the order of the High Court. Considering the plea, HC directed the authorities to start counseling, but not the admission procedure till the next date of hearing.
