The US and UK have always been considered as the most preferred destinations for the Indian students. But a report from Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), UK reveals that there is a decrease in the number of Indian students in recent years. In last few years there is a considerable decline in the number of students going to these countries for higher education because of drastic political changes which led to a fear that it would impact their career adversely.
According to the experts, the problem of obtaining the visa is seen as one of the biggest reasons for the decline in the number of Indian students in getting admissions in universities of UK.
As far as the US is concerned, the government led by the current US president, Donald Trump will adversely affect the situation. Though Indian students comprise 25 percent of international students in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM), there is a considerable decline in the enrolment of Indian students up to 13,150 in 2015-16 when compared to the number of students enrolled in 2010-11.
According to a renowned US-based research firm, it’s a challenging situation for British universities, as China and India comprise of one-third of international students in the UK. Furthermore, Ireland is one of the emerging destinations for the Indian students because of its academic friendly environment. It is also speculated that the demonetization policy in India and the stricter immigration policies in the US, will contribute to the decline in the number of Indian students in the coming years.
