An  amount of Rs.13 crore is being sought from the state government  of Odisha by the management of the Prestigious  Khallikote Autonomous College in Ganjam district of the state to preserve its building as a heritage structure, said Radhanath Rath, Registrar of the University. The Vice-chancellor of the cluster university, Manmath Padhy, stated that the building is unsafe as declared by engineers and it can not be used at all in the future and the University wanted to make it seven storeys tall. Khallikote Autonomous College in Odisha's Ganjam district has decided to preserve its building as a heritage structure. Rs.13 crore has been demanded from the state government by the institution of Khallikote Cluster University.

As per the University Registrar, the proposed building will be constructed using the said amount.The building has been part of premier educational institutions listed in the state and had played a significant role in enhancing higher education in its 160 years of history of South Odisha. MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik, President of the Executive Committee of the college, also expressed his views and said the building deserves to be preserved and he will get the approval from the government to make it a heritage site.

In year 1856, a Zilla school was started which later became an intermediate college called Union College as a part of Khallikote College. On August 16, 1893, the college was renamed as Khallikote College, after a sizable donation was given to the  functioning of the institution by the king of the erstwhile Khallikote estate, Harihar Mardaraj. A science laboratory was constructed  in 1910, when Rs 10,000 was donated by Madan Mohan Singh Deo, the king of the Dharakote estate. In the year 1979,  a three-storied building was constructed. A Centenary building and life science block with four galleries were added to the complex  in the year 1982.
