NEW DELHI: The Academic Council of Jawaharlal Nehru University has outrightly rejected the proposal of the central government to introduce short term courses on Indian culture and yoga, for the purpose of bringing forth Indian traditions, values and history before the world.
The proposal was initially moved by the university administration on recommendation from UGC and HRD Ministry. However, when the motion was put before the highest decision making authority of JNU (the Academic Council), it was rejected.
The right wing organizations, including the RSS, have a very strong opinion regarding promotion of Indian culture in elite educational institutions. The idea is to restore the weakened identity of Indian culture. This reinforcement is a major reason for this recommendation from the Centre.
At a time when the NDA government The university had last month circulated a draft of these three courses amongst various schools and departments of JNU for their comments.
is being accused of extreme saffron politics, especially the HRD Ministry, this rejection couldn't have come at a worse stage.
