The central Government has conveyed its ambitions to the Supreme Court about coming up with an all new grading system which would be used by the Universities to grade students.
The government expects to complete this task within a period of three months.
This information was furnished by Tushar Mehta to SC. He is the additional Solicitor General of the central Government. According to him, the government is in the process of consulting the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), UGC (University Grants Commission) and the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) to arrive at a consensus.
The stand taken by the Government wasn't appreciated by a number of private Universities which maintained that the central Government would be intruding their rights if it comes up with any such rule. They said that no such rule exists that would give such power to the Government. The SC bench, upon hearing the arguments of these Universities has given three weeks to the Government to respond to their allegations.
The UGC also told the SC that the eight universities were found to be 'deficient' upon their physical verification.
According to Maninder Singh, additional Solicitor General, the University Grants Commission has granted 12 months to these Universities to rectify their deficiencies and ensure that their faculty and infrastructure meet the requisite levels.
The Universities which were graded by the UGC on the directions of the SC include "“
- Institute of Advanced Studies in Education in Churu "“ Rajasthan
- Pannaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science & Technology (PRIST) "“ Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu)
- Maharishi Markandeshwar University "“ Ambala
- Manav Rachna International University "“ Faridabad
- Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya "“ Haridwar
- Academy of Maritime Education and Training "“ Chennai
- Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research "“ Chennai
- Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation "“ Salem, Tamil Nadu
As many as 41 deemed Universities are under the lens of the judiciary for failing to abide by the norms required to be fulfilled for recognition. The SC asked the University Grants Commission to undertake a physical verification of eight selected Universities after these Universities gave their consent.
