The CBSE has finally announced the most anticipated decision on return of Class 10 board examination in 2018. The board has collectively approved the proposal to reintroduce the board exams in 2018. As per the reports, the exams are going to be held again after a gap of seven years.
From the academic session 2017-18, compulsory board exams should be introduced for all students of class 10. This has been proposed in a meeting conducted by the CBSE with its members. The HRD ministry has conducted a survey, wherein it has been found that majority of respondents supported the re-establishment of board exams. A final decision is yet to be approved by the government.
The CBSE Board had made the Class X exams optional in 2011. This enabled students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination. It is also being rumoured that an 80:20 ratio will be adopted, where 80 per cent weightage will be given to the marks secured in board exam and 20 per cent will be school based evaluation.
The board has also proposed to extend the three language formula from classes 6 to 8 to classes 9 and 10. As of now, Hindi, English and modern Indian language are taught as three languages. The board is also proposing to the Centre that the languages listed in schedule VIII of the constitution should be taught under ‘Three language formula’ and purely foreign languages should be taken as fourth language but it should be an elective subject. In the past, Kendriya-Vidyalayas run by HRD ministry used to teach ‘German’ as a third language; however this had been discontinued later.
According to the sources, the first exam is expected to be held in March 2018.
