On January 8, 2018, the results of the CAT 2017 exam were released by the IIM Lucknow. This was the moment of joy for many aspirants who cleared the CAT 2017 exam but there are many who are unhappy with the IIM-L's evaluation of the exams. According to the students there are discrepancies between their raw and scaled scores and they have asked the HRD ministry to intervene in the matter.
However, IIM-L denied the possibility of any errors in the marks. The convener Neeraj Dwivedi told the indianexpress.com, “There are no errors in the notified scores and percentiles of candidates. IIMs only report scaled scores and percentiles. The scoring and the equating process is as given on the CAT website.”
CAT was conducted in two sessions and questions in each section of both the slots were difficult. In slot 1, DILR section was tough and in slot 2 VARC section was tough.
Exams which are conducted in more than one slot, the process of normalization is followed by the exam conducting body in order to make the evaluation fair. The raw scores are calculated and then through the process of normalization scores are equated by keeping the level of difficulty in mind.
For the first time, answer keys for the exam were released by the IIM and candidates were able to calculate their scores. IIM Lucknow had posted a note that “the objections received against CAT 2017 questions were carefully examined by the expert panels of IIMs. There is no change in the answer key of any question subsequent to this.”
Now that the candidates are unhappy with the result, they are demanding IIM to release the equating process.
