Country's premium technical education institutes IITs have everything they need to compete with world class universities and Ivy League universities but student to teacher ratio is holding them from gaining their rightful place.
IITs are the first choice of students from India who wish to pursue their career in technical education but the ratio at these institutes is 15:1 as opposed to 10:1.
This issue will be taken up at the meeting which will be held on August 23. The meeting will be chaired by HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.
"PhD students finishing their courses can be identified and mentored to join as faculty. The council will take up the issue of their campus recruitment. Also, adjunct faculty from industry can be identified and invited to teach a semester or two," said a senior ministry official.
Another option is to get the faculty from foreign institutes.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) holds the top spot in the world and has student-to-teacher ratio of 6.9. Only seven IITs make the rankings. The top two are IIT-Bombay, which comes in the 351-400 section, and Delhi in the 401-500 section (there are no individual ranks beyond the top 100). IIT-Bombay has a student-faculty ratio of 14:1 while it is 16:1 for Delhi.
