In order to battle against ragging within the fraternity of universities, the UGC has recently issued a notification against ragging by rendering more teeth in curbing the menace. UGC Regulation on curbing the menace of ragging in Higher Educational Institutions (Third Amendment), 2016 will come into force on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.

A look at the changes made

  • The incident of student suicides over the last few years in the fraternity of university had compelled the UGC to come up with stricter regulations in treating the wrath of ragging across the country
  • "Lot of students have lost their lives owing to humiliation due to ragging. At the freshers' party on campus, we sensitised students about the new amendments and also launched a toll free number on campus where students can register their complaints," said G Nagaraju, chief warden at the University of Hyderabad.

The University of Hyderabad had simultaneously constituted two anti-ragging squads following the directives circulated by the UGC, thus broadening the realm of anti-ragging provisions through its third amendment over UGC Regulation on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions (Third Amendment), 2016.
