Getting into AIIMS as a MBBS student can be one of the biggest achievements for any student̢s life. More than the difficult examination, what makes it one of the toughest entrance exams in the country is the minimal seats offered by the institute in its UG courses. For all such students who have made cracking AIIMS as their aim, there is a great news on the circuit.
The authorities have decided to increase the total UG intake at AIIMS from the current 72 to 100. Apart from that, seven foreign nationals would also be inducted into the courses. These changes are expected to come into force from the 2017 academic season itself.
As per Dr. M C Mishra, the director of AIIMS, "In sixty years of its journey, AIIMS has grown in strength, thanks to the sheer dedication of our predecessors and former directors who shaped this institution. It has grown tremendously with time, both academically and in service delivery. We have decided to increase our UG intake, and, I am happy to announce that from next year onwards, we will be admitting 100 students for this course,"
He made this announcement on the occasion of the diamond jubilee of the institute̢s foundation day. As per the current intake plan, 72 Indian and 5 foreign students are given admission to the UG course of AIIMS each year. Post the increase in the number of seats, the reservation quota and its percentage would remain the same as before.
Set up in the year 1956, AIIMS was the realization of the lifelong dream of India̢s first health minister, Rajkumari Amrita Kaur. Her dedication to the cause ensured that AIIMS establishes itself as an institute of international reputation and prestige.
Dr. Mishra also added, "Besides, we have already increased by almost 90 per cent the intake for DM (Doctorate in Medicine) and MCh (Master of Surgery) programmes. We have been expanding facilities at our Masjid Moth campus here too and at Trauma Centre we have added 1,800 beds. In next 10 years, we target 6,000 beds for AIIMS,"
Apart from Delhi, AIIMS has 6 regional centres at Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh. All these institutes intake 100 students each year for their UG program.
