A list of 26 new colleges has been recommended by the The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). These colleges have applied to open undergraduate courses in the academic year 2015-16. However, for not filling the necessary criteria, the proposals of five colleges have been turned down.
The University administration stated that as the procedures for initiating these courses and securing permissions from the state government is a lengthy task, it will take another year before the colleges are able to start the courses. And if all the recommended colleges get an affirmation the courses will begin from the next academic year (2016-17) creating at least 1300 additional seats.
The central and the state government have given permission to only one nursing college.
The applications for opening new colleges or new courses are to be submitted after the notification has been issued, by October 31. The Registrar of the university, Kashinath Garkal informed that the colleges will be considered according to the nearby population and have to meet up with the infrastructural aspects recommended to the state government after the university is satisfied. Complying with the norms of the perspective plans and different parameters mentioned in them is necessary.
Also notifying that the central council and the state governments have independent heads for different categories, he said that the institutions have to obtain their consent as well, although the final consent rests with MUHS.
There are a total of 331 institutes across the state including 35 medical colleges, 28 dental colleges 62 Ayurveda, 6 Unani, 45 homeopathy, and 155 colleges of allied health sciences presently in the state.
The colleges that have obtained permission from the state government and central council are The Anand Charitable Trust, a nursing college and Anand Hospital (Vaijapur). The last step of getting the final consent from the MUHS will soon begin.
