The Maharashtra Government made a shocking statement on Monday. The Government said that about 120 colleges in the state have only 2 to 10 students enrolled in them.
The information was furnished by the minister of state for education, Ravindra Waikar in the state's Legislative Assembly during the question hour.
He further went on to say that despite having zero students on the roll, a number of colleges are seeking government funds to fill their pockets.
The Government, according to the minister, has asked for a list of such colleges and is planning to take strict actions against such institutions.
The education minister, Vinod Tawde further added that a number of colleges are facing the problem of student dropout.
Answering another question in the assembly, Tawde said that his Government will planning to take several steps to ensure that the Marathi language is preserved and encourage in the state. The Marathi medium schools would also be given special encouragement from the Government.
He was quoted saying that "We will also take steps to ensure that quality education is imparted in the existing Marathi medium schools. Out of the 43 applications received for setting up of new schools in Mumbai, 28 are Marathi medium,"
