The Indian government has taken many initiatives to improve the quality of the education and learning. Despite being among the third best education system among the world, the Indian still tries to make it the no.1. New measures have been taken to improve the learning quality in schools and colleges all over India. Many universities or degree colleges have opened besides the remaining ones to sustain the overgrowing demand of the people. Similarly like other degrees or courses, the maritime education also comes into view beside the remaining ones.

Directorate general of shipping led the initiative in ensuring the quality of the education India. The directorate general also wants to improve the conditions of the institute for good learning places. The directors of the maritime department promise to start a program where inspection would be done on a regular basis of the learning and education system in all the maritime training institutes. The inspection programs will be handled by the Comprehensive inspection program (CIP).

It is scheduled for the CIP members to inspect regularly for academic performance, to provide a credit by renowned bodies and also to rate the institutions according to their performance. This initiative is positively going to bring fruitful results as the institutions would be on a competition among them. But unfortunately, the desired results have not been observed till now. The reason behind this is that the maritime institutes fail to have qualitative equipments and materials to provide the best education.

This grading process started is expected to give a good assuring output for the maritime institutions because this will improve the condition of the institutes for the maritime education. This grading system would also be aided, if possible, by the Ship Classification Societies. They can come to any maritime institution to take tests and inspect.

India has been remarked for its huge wealth and is recorded to have recognized as the maximum supplier of instruments for the global industry and other shipping utility. India supplies the world market with 6% of the total seafarers where it keeps only 1% of it by itself for its own country purposes. In number, there are almost more than 82,000 seafarers born in India but serving duty all over the globe.

This is the result of the hard work of old maritime educations where colleges were up to mark and learning quality was good. But nowadays, the maritime institutes are not so much resourceful like the previous years. Therefore, proper maritime education is a must nowadays.

Earlier all the maritime institutes were government based but later on private institutions got their permission to participate in 1996. Till now almost 130 private maritime training institutes have been set up all over the world. These institutes offer varied courses and training subjects. All the private institutes are controlled and monitored by the Directorate General of Shipping. But unfortunately, these maritime institutes are passing through a really bad phase whose major causes are inadequate material supply and good education.
