It was a normal life for 21 year old Neeraj. All he did was attend to the household work and cooked. There was no motive for growth and neither was there any scope for him. He never knew what his dreams were. After completing his schooling he stayed at home and ran errands. In a quest to change people's lives a few students from Delhi University modified his life completely.
Ghamdhoj is a village located at about 90 KM from Delhi. The students adopted the village and took to changing things in the village. Now Neeraj runs his own beauty parlor and earns money. They have started educating the villagers in various courses. They also took the initiative to open up a new library for the girls in the village.
They collected about 1000 books and opened up the library. This gives the people to study a lot of new books and gain a lot of knowledge. The people of the village did not agree to the proposals of these students at first. The students persuaded a lot and got the permission from the senior people of the village. This was a big win for the students.
The students have access to a lot on NGOs and so they decided to work in this part. Their main motive is to make the education for a girl accessible to the village people. They want to emphasize on the fact that education for the girl child is also necessary. It gives them a chance to stand up higher in life. They earn themselves a lot more self respect through this.
The funding for these students comes in parts. A part of it comes through the NGOs and a part of it comes from the revenue generating activities that they have started in the village. They opened up poultry with one of the women and are planning on starting a few more with the cooperation of the other women in the village. This will generate higher revenue.
They are planning on starting a girl school in the village. They are also working on solar electric panels. They are installing them to make sure that the village gets sufficient amount of electricity that is required for the village people. The village also has a lot of discrimination on the basis of gender. The students plan on eliminating these discriminations and also increase the economic standards of the village.
The students are also planning on starting a mushroom farm. They plan on starting boutiques, chocolate making factories and a lot more to make the village self sustained. They plan to educate the people so that the discriminations can be removed. Since most of the village is poor and belong to the backward class this is very important. The village people also appreciate the work of the students. They feel that the students have done everything that is possible I their power to improve the village condition.
