Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
For a number of decades now, distance learning in India has been synonymous to IGNOU. Run by the central Government, IGNOU holds the distinction of being the largest University in the world, catering to more than 4 million students. The university has also set up 5 zones, viz. East, West, North, South and North East. Students from over 40 nations have enrolled in the university. IGNOU offers as many as 226 academic programs to its students.
Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University
Established in the year 1989, this university has more than 6,50,000 students on its rolls. The 5th Open University in India, it is also a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Commonwealth of learning, Canada. The university has its headquarters at Nashik and study centres in all parts of Maharashtra. Duly recognized by the University Grants Commission, the university offers a number of academic programs including diplomas, graduation, post graduation and doctoral degrees. The university has also tied up with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) to launch Edu-Sat based education for its students.
Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra
Inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the year 1957, Kurukshetra University is one of the members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Known for its high quality course material, the university currently boasts of more than 30 different departments. In 2009, the university received 'A' grade rating from the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).
Sikkim Manipal University
This public-private funded University came into being in the year 1995. The University is duly recognized by UGC (University Grants commission) and the DEC (Distance Education Council). Situated at Gangtok, the University offers a wide range of courses to its students.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University
It was earlier known by the name of Andhra Pradesh Open University. BRAOU has over 200 study centres spread across the state of Andhra Pradesh. The university is well known for making use of a number of multimedia techniques to ensure quality education for the students. In the year 1999, the University tied up with the regional Doordarshan channel to telecast video lessons for the students.
