Many people may not know about Savitribai Phule or her contributions to India for the liberation of women and making them know about their rights. Unlike any other freedom fighter, Savitribai Phule has got some nice contributions to India and in the process of its independence. In those days when the british people as well as the local people were treating women as the weaker sections of the society, Savitribai Phule emerged to defend the women and their rights. She was considered to be one of the strongest social reformer in British India. She stood up for the rights of women when others did not acknowledge it and brought the dignity of the women back in the society. The thought implemented by Savitribai was so remarkable that it had shattered all the traditional ropes that were prevalent in those days. The women of today's India consider Savitribai Phule as their mother because of her contributions.
Apart from all this the main contribution of Savitribai Phule was regarding the education of Indian women. It was she who initiated the thought that the women will also be educated as the men. She had to face a lot of hurdles on the way while trying to achiever her goals however after she achieved her ambition her happiness knew no bounds and any educated woman must thank her for this because without her initiative or approach the women would have still been treated as the vulnerable section of the society and would not have been provided with education.
In the 19th century, there was a strong misconception among the people of the society that it was wrong to educate any female child but Savitribai broke all these rules and she had established a school for providing education for the girls. She did not have any caste rules, the school was free for all and any girl from any caste could enroll her name in order to get the education. Initially, she had to face a lot of protest from the people and a very less number of children enrolled their names in the school. However, when the people saw about the increase in the knowledge of the girl children they started to give importance to their daughters and started sending them to the school. Year after year, she started making more and more schools for adult girls as well and made some nice progress in the society. The hurdles that she had to go through in the process are unimaginable. People harassed her physically and mentally but Savitribai ignored all these harassments and did her work very much profoundly.
Keeping all these in mind, today, the Indian government has started various programs and institutions in the name of her and has passed an act named as the 'Right to Education Act' so that no person, be it a girl or a boy, is left uneducated in the society. Savitribai Phule is considered as the mother of modern girl's education as without her contribution no girl could have acquired the privilege of education.
